Color Wheel Magic variations

Here is a picture of my completed 2009 QPN Challenge given my Mary Kerr. Sunflower Power!
We also have a mini quilt auction at the conference. I made the mini color wheel for the auction.
Mini Magic – I think this might be a good workshop.
I did piping around the edges with the fabrics from the color wheel. The color rotation worked out exact without me having to try.

Here is the back.

and label.
Mary Kerr purchased this quilt at the auction.

Thanks for the input!!!!!

Thanks for the input on this project. Here is what I have so far. Medium center, fun fur (which I had to give a hair cut to because is was way to long) around that center, beads partly completed (Michael’s did not have any Swarski Crystals when I went there last night), stem and leaves. No ladybugs yet, but not to worry, I am planning on adding them.

One of my sewing students asked why I put fish on the back. I didn’t know except I had that small piece of fabric and it sang to my heart.
Now the fun is over for alittle while, I really need to work on my TAXES!!!!! The clock is ticking!!!!

Quilting projects this past week

Monday, June 2nd, 2008

Anita has been coming for private quilting classes. She wanted to make a quilt for her new little granddaughter that will be born in October. On Wednesday she came for a class and she completed her quilt. I love the color she choose and how the quilt looks.
NQA has a Little Quilt Auction each year at the annual show. The quilts are autioned to earn money for the grants that they offer. Our guild is trying to get some grant money and so we had a push to make some quilts for the auction. Because of this and that I will be at the auction, I decided that I would make a quilt for the auction. Here is the quilt I made for the auction. I did not want to take the time to make a complete quilt so I used a top that I had made for a class sample.

I used a double needle with variaged thread for the quilting on the outer edges.

Back Home!!!!!

Monday, March 17th, 2008

On Thursday, March 6th I was out at Mineola, NY at a quilt guild presenting “The Legacy Lives On – Five Generations of Quilters”. The next morning I unpacked my suitcases (not usual, I would have probably waited a few days and just left the suitcases hanging around. But when I was in Utah I liked what Emily did, she unpacked everythng right way so it was not hanging over her head.) I am really glad that I did unpack on Friday morning because I realized that I did not have my piece of the double wedding-ring quilt that my Great-grandmother had made. I was wondering if I was going to have to change my lecture to Four Generations of quilts. Anyway, I called my contact at the guild and she said she would make some calls. She called about 1 week later and said that she had finally tracked down my quilt piece. A member of the guild was collecting items for a sale the guild was having in a couple of months and while this peices was being passed around she got alittle confused and thought it was for the sale and just put it with all the other stuff that had been for the sale. Anyway, the above pieces arrived home last Friday. I was very glad to have it.

(This my remake of that quilt and below is the information on the quilt label)

The original Double Wedding Ring quilt was made by Hannah Maria Jensen Mortensen for her granddaughter Carma Mortensen Ricks as a wedding gift around 1942. Carma stored her precious quilt on the top shelf of a closet. The quilt was accidentally pushed up against a light bulb and was scorched and burned beyond repair. Years later, for a Young Women’s project, Hillary Landon (Carma’s granddaughter) cut pieces of the quilt and framed them for family members.

In 2002, Mary Anne Ricks Ciccotelli (Carma’s daughter) decided that she wanted to make a reproduction of the original quilt as a tribute to her great-grandmother and mother. To make it as authentic as possible, she collected feedsacks on eBay. Because of knee surgery in 2004 and not being able to get to her sewing machine, she opted to hand-piece the quilt top. During a visit to Idaho in August of that same year, Deanna Ricks Wade, Susan Ricks Landon (Mary Anne’s sisters) and Connie Christensen Andersen (Mary Anne’s childhood friend) helped hand-quilt around the rings of the quilt. Mary Anne took the quilt home to New York to complete the hand-quilting.

Color Wheel Magic Worhsop Preparation

On Saturday, March 15th – National Quilting Day I had the opportunity of teach my Color Wheel Magic workshop. In preparation for the workshop I played around with a couple of more colorwheel variations. I decided to try one with a printed background. What do you think?
I was in the process of redoing my handout (and in preparation for publishing the pattern) so I started to make another color wheel so I could take pictures of the different steps.
Here are 11 of the 12 quilters who attended the workshop with their color wheels.
They did a GREAT job!
Here is my sample color wheel.
Disappearing Nine-patch Rainbow
On March 4 I got a touch of the flu and didn’t feel like doing the things that I should so I started a new quilt (big surpirse). Anyway, I loved the rainbow quilt that Jennie just made and I wanted to make my version of a rainbow quilt. I decided to use the disappearing 9-patch block. This quilt has been well received and will probably be a workshop that I am going to offer in the future.
Here is the completed top. I guess this is another project on my UFO list (or maybe it is not a UFO until it has been around for a few months).

To cough or not to cough (I wish I had a choice!!!!!)

Monday, October 29th, 2007

A week ago Sundy I started to develop a cough. Since Tom and I work in the Nursery with the young children we felt that I should not go to church. Well, I never dreamed that I would still be dealing with that cough today. And yes, I did have to disappoint my nursery fans once again yesterday. In fact, I ended up sleeping most of the time Tom was gone to church.

On Tuesday I present “The Legacy Lives On – Five Generations of Quilters” to the Warwick Valley Quilters. It was a little over 1 hour drive from Pelham. That lecture really pushed my voice to the limit. I was really glad that I had my new wireless ampliphier. That really help. I have finished the “On the Go” HexabagTM pattern. I sold three! YAH!!!!! The rest of the week I was working on getting the draft of for the “Spring Fever” hexabag completed. I have had these patterns hanging over my head for way to long! I completed the draft and had Tom proof read it on Thursday evening. Now I am ready to send it to the testers.

All day Friday I spent finishing the Fall Color Wheel wallhanging.
Friday afternoon Chris was working on is Halloween costume and I was working on the wallhanging. I wanted to have something going on the TV, so I decided to put the X-file DVD to work. I probably would have worked faster (and Chris too) if the TV would have been off. Oh, well, four episodes on Friday and two on Saturday. (Thanks Emily and Jennie, enjoying the Christmas present.)

Anyway, I was making the wallhanging for the Stone’s (Temple president and matron at the Manhattan Temple). There last day was Saturday, Oct. 27. They have been there since April of 2004. It is going to be different having a new president and matron. Anyway, because of my cough I did not go to the temple Friday night. I finished the wallhanging at 10 pm., drove to the city to pick-up Tom (and deliver the quilt). Tom had the quilt put on Pres. Stone’s desk.

Here is a close up of the quilting on the artificial leaves that I put on the corners with 606 Spray.

I used another leaf for the label on the back of the quilt.
Sis. Stone called at 9:00 am on Saturday morning and raved about the quilt. She was thrilled. They had started work at 5:00 am at the temple and she said that she had been waiting since then to call. It’s fun making something for someone when you think they are going to appreciate it and they do.
This morning I woke-up at 5:30 am (no this is not the norm!) and was coughing, so not wanting to disturb Tom I went downstairs to my sewing room. I had hopes of finishing another project to post in this weeks blog, but I need ink for the printer to print the label and I don’t want to post anything about it until it is completely FINISHED!!!!! So, that will have to wait until next week. If all goes as planned (ha, ha, ha!!!!), I should have a few projects to share next week.
Until then (and hoping that I am not coughing by then) Good-bye and enjoy your week!

Queen of the LAST MINUTE!!!!!!

Thursday, October 18th, 2007

I know that it is not Monday, but that is where the Queen steps in. On Monday evening I went to the Garden State Quilters and presented The Legacy Lives On – Live Generations of Quilters. I stayed overnight in Chatham, NJ and taught The Color Wheel Magic workshop on Tuesday. Well, being the Queen that I am, I was rushing around like a chicken with its head cut off on Monday trying to get everything together for the workshop that I wanted (and needed).

The persentation and workshop went well. I did pick up some pointers and now I am rethinking the cuting of the project because we spent about 2 hours cutting during the workshop. If we would have had most of that time on the back-end, most of the students would have completed the color wheel during the workshop. So, major redoing in the way I have students prepare for the class. Also, I need some practice of using the camera for the class and how to show the steps. I choose a light gray for the background fabric and there was not enough contract between the fabric and the table. So, another point to rethink.

Anyway, this sharing is cutting into the post for next week.

Village Squares Quilters will summer challenge charity quilts – fabrics donated from Blank Fabrics.

This past week I had the monthly meeting for Village Squares Quilters. I am the president this year and have really worked hard to keep the meetings moving. I was thrilled when we adjorned the board meeting and I looked at my clock and it was 11:15 am. Exactly when we were suppose to be completed. I think the agenda with times noted on it has really helped all in attendance be aware of how long they are taking (and other keep them on track because they don’t want to loose time to someone else.)

Completed color wheel kits

On Wednesday (the Queen stricks again) I ordered the additional fabrics I needed for the color wheel kits from www.webfabrics.net and they shipped them very promptly so I was happy (and saved from having a BIG problem.

At the end of the week the fabrics arrived and I was cutting (and cutting, and cutting and cutting (it seemed) color wheel kits for the workshop I was talking about. There are 12 colors with a light, medium and dark of each of these 12 colors. So, a total of 36 fabrics in the kit.

After I had the kits completed they it was time to make one more color wheel out of the exact fabrics that are in the kits. Then, of course to be a good teacher, I needed to design and work on the handout (complete with picture examples). Now you can see why I was rushing at the last hours on Monday.

Well, I am home now. Which fire should the Queen work on next. (Maybe next year I can organize things to be able to step down from my title, but until then …………….I am glad that I have a patient husband that loves me and will put up with me and all my crazy last minute things that I do.

October Summer

Monday, October 8th, 2007
One thing that I think I appreciate more since living in the East is the Fall weather. It is such a relief after just enduring the HOT, HUMID, and HAZEY summers that we have. The air feels crisp and it seems so nice to have the windows open. I added the above statment to my draft earlier this week -, little did I know that the HOT, HUMID and HAZEY conditions were coming back with a vengence. Needles to say – the AC has been going in our house these past few days. But, I have been comfortable down sewing this week-end while Tom has been at a Scout Training (Wood Badge) program. I watched conference on my laptop and have been perfectly happy. Here are a few things that I have been working on:
Here is a picture of the Hexabag that I just completed for Autumn!
Next week I am teaching the Color Wheel Magic workshop for a guild in New Jersey.
I have been playing around with some other ideas of how I can use this technique. I also like to have a few different ideas to display at the workshop. Plus this helps me work out the bugs in the pattern.

I have also been piecing a quilt top (twin bed size) for the Verteran’s quilt project that Village Squares Quilter’s is working on. In White Plains – Common Grounds is creating a half-way house for veterans. They asked if VSQ quilters wouls make quilts for each of the beds. They need about 50 quilts by mid-December. No picture as of now, I will show one when I get it quilted.

We received an email with these adorable pictures of our Grandson – Ty! Cutest grandson I have!!!!!!!!

Back to the Studio (FINALLY)

Friday, February 2nd, 2007

During the first part of the January I was playing catch-up with all my accounting information. I am pretty organized now and want to keep it that way.

Here is the new sample for the Free Motion Fantasy quilting workshop that I offer. I taught my first workshop of 2007 and used my video camera with the projector for the demonstrations. It was great! It was like all 12 students were the one student that puts their head in front of all the other students so no one else can see. Everyone sat in their seats and watch the demonstartion with great clarity.

I am thankful to the QuiltTeach yahoo group that I belong to and Bonnie MacCaffery for sharing a picture of the set-up that she uses. After looking at her picture Tom was able to use parts from a broken tripod and swing arm lamp to make using the camera even better. I can’t wait to use it for the Hands-on-Demo for the Needle and Thread Approach to the Folded Hexagon. Here is my latest project that I have completed yesterday. I made a color wheel like this about 1 1/2 years ago, but I only had 32 flying geese in the outer circle, so when I sewed the other circle onto the inner circle I had to offset the colors you it wouldn’t notice there was not three of each of the inner circle colors. I wanted to make one with the 36 flying geese (light, medium, and dark of each of the 12 colors in the center) and have the colors next to each other in the inner circle and outer circle. So, finally it’s completed. Just in time for the next MAQGNet resouce brouchure.
Here are a couple of pictures of my newest Hexabags (TM). Now to get the patterns made for them. I hope Tom is ready for this next adventure since he is my #1 editor and finds all my erros and inconsistencies.

This Hexabag (TM) was the result of a pincushion challenge at Empire Quilters. I decided that I would make my pincushion from folded hexagons. Well as my pincushion was sitting on the table I thought that would make a cute bag, all I would need to do was add a zipper and make the hexagons larger. So here it is!

The Train Day

Sunday, December 10th, 2006

I think that it could be safley said that Tom and I are kind of obsessive with our hobbies. Yesterday we had an openhouse for members of our church to come and see his new Christmas/Polar Express train layout.

Here is the tree from his layout.
Of course, it needed a Christmas tree skirt and he wanted it to be like the tree in the Polar Express movie – a compass with “S” in all four directions.

You can see more pictures from the layout at Tom’s blog
